Before I became a librarian, I worked as a markup and conversion specialist for a small publishing-services bureau. Under force of necessity, I learned to handle data and metadata conversion as quickly and expeditiously as possible.
Conversion and markup jobs I have performed include:
- the conversion of an entire English dictionary from an obsolete typesetting format to XML
- the conversion of typeset Quark tables to computable PHP arrays for a catalog vendor
- the conversion of typeset primary-source documents to a subset of TEI
- the keying of polytonic Greek phrases and passages into markup for the ACLS Humanities E-Book project
