Selected technical skills

  • SGML/XML: Design and document DTDs. Read and edit XML Schema. Mark up and convert documents. Write XSLT transformations. Some RelaxNG, SAX. Familiar XML and other metadata vocabularies include: Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, OEBPS, TEI, XHTML, RSS.
  • Web design and information architecture: Design accessible, usable, standards-compliant websites that look good in modern browsers. Familiar with XHTML, CSS1, CSS2, SSI, CGI, Movable Type, WordPress, wiki software.
  • Database design and management: Design (using ERD methods) and build small databases, primarily in Access. Functional in SQL. Manage PostgreSQL.
  • Programming: Python and XSLT, some Visual Basic, some Java.
  • Systems administration: Functional with Unix command-line, Postgres, Apache configuration.
  • Automated text conversion: Convert from Quark XPress, Penta, Microsoft Word, and miscellaneous text-based typesetting formats to markup.
  • Typesetting: Penta, some Quark.
  • Ebooks: Design and code ebooks in Open eBook, Microsoft Reader, MobiPocket, Franklin, SoftBook, and Rocket eBook formats.
  • Data curation: Conversant with standards and procedures for curation of research data.
